Good question!

It's usually a good idea, especially when beginning dowsing, to spend some time making sure you aren't being affected by any outside energies you don't want.

Some people ask to be connected to a higher power or something similar and then wait until they get a response in some fashion.

Others will take the time to actually perform a quick clearing on themselves using any number of methods.

As you get more comfortable with dowsing and more familiar with how you feel, so you'll need to spend less time on this preparation. But you'll always need to check yourself for interference.
