Dowsing for Beginners

Are you a beginner in dowsing? No matter. We can help you get comfortable quickly.

Dowsing for beginners (and for everyone else as well), should have some element of fun. It shouldn't be something you have to sweat at. At the end of this page, you'll understand why

It can be difficult to know where to start on dowsing. For beginners, it's probably easiest to start with intuition.

Dowsing and intuition are very closely related. As you develop one, so you develop the other. Therefore, don't get too involved in focusing on the tools you use at the expense of what goes on inside your head.

Dowsing, for beginners, normally concentrates on

  • a bit of the history of dowsing
  • some suggestions as to how dowsing works
  • an introduction to the main dowsing methods

(In all of this, you're going to come across a lot of use of the words 'energy' and 'energy fields'. So it's probably something to get used to now! In fact, there's a page on dowsing energy fields which you'll find fun to do.)

History of dowsing

For beginners, many sites talk about how ancient the skill is....as if it really matters!

The only thing which matters is that dowsing actually works. You can talk of cave paintings, the ancient Chinese, Biblical references or German miners if you want, but it's all irrelevant.

Why? Because if dowsing is close to intuition and intuition is what all humans have then I guess that humans have always been able to do it. Sometimes (actually, for a long time), it didn't have the name to go with it.

After all, the word itself was only used for the first time in the seventeenth century and then only rarely for the 100 years after that.

How does dowsing work?

The brief answer is: Nobody knows for certain. So you can take your pick of either how the tools work or how the answers are obtained.

The tools work because of the small involuntary movements made by the dowser (the 'ideomotor effect' as it is called). But where the answers come from, how dowsing works really, is open to debate. But there are some very interesting ideas!

What are the main methods?

Basically there are only two methods:

  1. Using tools
  2. Deviceless dowsing

With either of these you can dowse both in person and remotely, at a distance.

It's our firm belief that the tool is less important than the person using it and it doesn't really matter what you use, as long as it works.

Some people will find themselves more at ease, or able to get better answers, in one type of dowsing. Maybe you'll be a whizz at finding oil or water. Or, perhaps you'll be better at finding lost objects.

What now?

As you can see, there is little agreement upon any aspect of this intuitive skill. Dowsing, for beginners at least, is wide open for exploration and enjoyment at all levels. That's what puts the fun into it! There are no hard and fast rules, but plenty of opportunity for experimentation...

If you want to know the one real key then it is this...There is virtually nothing you should or should not do in dowsing. But you should always be aware of whatever it is you do end up doing! Never do things unconsciously, without a purpose, without focus.

Now you should go and practice! Dowsing is a great of developing intuition. You can do that and start dowsing to detect pregnancy. Then, of course, there's always exploring energy fields.

The point about dowsing is that there's so much you can try and explore that you will always have something to do!!
