Just Started Dowsing

A friend of mine had received a pendulum as a gift. She let me look at it after she had first gotten it.
When I held it the first time I felt, I don't know how to explain it, I found that as I held it in my hand if I thought of a direction I wanted it to spin it would.
If I wanted it to stop and go the opposite direction it would.
As I began to practice with it more and more I found that I would ask a question, not just a simple yes or no but a real question that required full answers, that this thing would spell out letters in the air.
For example, I was in Tx on the road in a truck, it was a part I haven't been before. I was getting extremely low on fuel(we use fuel man cards for diesel when we on the road so there are only a few stations I could stop at). So I asked it what exit the gas station would be at it spelled out a number. Imagine my surprise when I got to the exit that the gas station I needed was there and that it was the first one that I had come across that took fuelman cards.
I have so many other stories like this one too. Since then I have made my own charts. I want to know is this type of stuff normal and is it completely real.
I have so many questions, if anyone that is experienced with this has time to explain somethings to me I would be grateful.
