Dowsing and knowledge

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, so I'll do my best to answer.
You can dowse the answer to pretty much any question. That means that you don't necessarily have to know in detail what the content of the question might be about. For example, you can hold a question in your mind, one which has either a yes or no answer, and ask someone else to dowse the answer. They would have no idea about the content.
However, if you are dowsing, let's say for oil, then it is highly important that you have some idea about how oil is located, the types of rocks and soils, the ability to drill and and pump and so on. Elsewhere on this site you can read about a man in South Africa who locates diamond-bearing areas and uses his knowledge of the geology to help him.
I can't be much more specific without more details, but I hope this helps.
