What should the length of string be for beginners? In my experience when I hold the pendulum with long string, it takes long time to respond, and during this time my mind loses its focus. When I hold pendulum with short string, it gives me quick response, and during the whole process my mind does not lose focus because the time is short.

I think you just answered your own question here. The shorter string will give you quicker responses. A long string will take longer to move to a response.
It's not just what is best for beginners, but for everyone. It's much easier to dowse with a pendulum on a short string than a long one.
