Y-rod positions

With a willow Y stick straight out in front of me walking around my claim I got the following responses. It would come half way up in some areas. In others it would come up fast and hit me in the face and bend over my shoulder or just stand straight up while in others it would turn straight down. In one of the areas where it stood up I dug down and found a volcanic intrusion.
This is the first time I have ever tried dowsing and I have no idea what the different positions of the stick mean. Can you help me?

Well, Dave, I can't give you too much help, for reasons I'll explain, but I can give you some pointers.
You don't say what you were dowsing for. Dowsing is, in essence, a search. What you are searching for depends on your question and I don't know what your question was, or even if you had a question in mind when you got those responses.
Let's say that you were just interested in seeing what the y-rod would do for you. In other words, the question was something along the lines of, 'show me what you can do'. (Even if you hadn't actually said that out loud.) And, sure enough, the dowsing rod showed you what it could do; pointing down or up or half-way...
Maybe, you are naturally more sensitive to some things, like water, for example, and the rod dipped where there was water underground.
What you need to do first of all is have a clear question in your mind as you set off. It can be anything. For example, you could be searching for underground water, so you'd ask to be shown where the most water was underground (or the best drinking water, or the center of the widest underground stream is - you get the picture).
Or you could ask to be shown more volcanic intrusions.
By narrowing down your search, you'll get more understandable results.
